About Golf du Champ de Bataille

Without a doubt Golf du Champ de Bataille is one of the best courses not just in Normandy but in the whole of Northern France. It was an interesting collaboration between the American golf architect Robin Nelson and the French landscape gardener Thierry Huau and so we have a well-designed course that has also maintained and enhanced the natural beauty of the landscape. It’s a partnership that has created a course that is a joy to play both from a golfing and also scenic perspective. The original design was adapted and two new holes were introduced designed by the French architect Jean Manuel Rossi that have kept the original spirit of the designers. Situated in the centre of Normandy near Evereux it’s about a 90-minute drive from Paris in one direction and Dieppe and Deauville in the other and the nearest large town is Rouen about 30 minutes away.

The course is laid out in the middle of the forest and from the back tees are about 6600 yards but there are several tees on each hole to choose from so whatever your ability you can have a very enjoyable round. There are 4 par fives and 4 par threes making the par 72 and although the course is not long by modern standards it’s a really good challenge as each hole winds through centuries-old trees. It’s one of those courses where you can think you are the only people playing the course as each hole seems self-contained. It’s similar in that respect to Woburn and Wentworth in the UK and it’s easy to see why it’s ranked in the top 25 courses in France. The course follows the natural flow of the valleys and utilises the various lakes as strategic hazards. It is easy to get distracted by the shrubs and flowers and it’s a treat to enjoy the course in the late spring when the rhododendrons are in full bloom.  The greens get rave reviews from visitors no matter what time of year they have played and the overall condition of the course is generally well above average.

It’s not only the golf course that will satisfy your senses as the restaurant Les Terraces du Champ de Bataille is situated in the heart of the forest and provides the perfect setting for its creative and refined cuisine. There is a covered driving range, practice putting green and both buggies and clubs can be hired at the course.

Golf du Champ de Bataille is a course that should be played by everyone visiting France and is well worth driving out of your way to play.
