Activities: As with all great cities, one of the best things to do in Lisbon is to stroll around and discover its hidden gems. The city boasts beautiful neighbourhoods, like Alfama and Mouraria, where you’ll find charming squares shaded by fragrant orange trees and streets adorned with intricate tiles. Located slightly further out is the UNESCO world heritage site, Sintra. Famous for its romantic 19th-century architecture, including the Pena Palace, Sintra is a must-visit destination for those visiting Lisbon.
Cultural attractions: Fado music pervades the streets of Lisbon, and you are likely to stumble across it without even meaning to. Originally thought to have originated in the 19th century in Portugal, no visit to Lisbon is complete without spending some time soaking up the melodies. Castelo de São Jorge is Lisbon’s most recognisable attractions which commands an enviable position overlooking the city high up on the hill near Alfama. There is also the 16th-century Jerónimos monastery which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is absolutely stunning. Further west along the coast is Estoril and Cascais – two stunning sea side towns accessible via train which takes 30 minutes. Slightly further afield but definitely worth the visit is Sintra which features numerous palaces and cathedrals in the hills.
If you are staying in Lisbon city centre, there are so many options for nightlife however worth noting that everyone’s schedule is pushed further back with revellers not arriving until early hours and lasting until sunrise. Areas in Lisbon to explore on an evening include Barrio Alto and it’s neighbour Cais do Sodre whilst the Lisbon docks have recently undergone a revival with the creation of ‘Pink Street’. Further away, Estoril has Europe’s largest casino and Cascais has a number of bars and restaurants on the sea front and Marina.
