Torrequebrada Golf, Benalmadena

One of the best-established golf courses on the ‘Sunshine Coast’, Torrequebrada Golf opened in 1976 and has been one of the region’s most popular destinations ever since. It’s perfectly situated about 20 minutes from Malaga Airport and 10 minutes from the centre of Benalmadena.

It was one of the first designs by Jose Pepe Gancedo who has gone on to produce many more courses throughout Europe. It is an 18-hole par 72 course stretching to around 6500 yards from the back tees. It’s quite like an English Parkland course in style with over 100 different varieties of shrubs and trees lining the fairways. However, you do get a lot better views of the sea here than you usually find in the UK.

As it’s not a long course this is a course where thinking is required rather than raw power. The undulating landscape tests the golfer’s ability to hit shots from all sorts of different lies and there is a great variety of holes including some spectacular short holes. The third is only around 100 yards sharply downhill to a small green surrounded by bunkers with very little margin for error. The 7th is a short par 4 and is one of the most scenic holes on the course. It’s downhill and you drive onto a narrow fairway and then have to hit your second shot over a lake that is protecting the green.

The eighteenth is a really good finishing hole. You drive from an elevated tee from where you get a great view of the course the clubhouse and the mountains provide a scenic backdrop. From the fairway, you have an uphill shot to a green that is extremely well protected by some astute bunkering.

It may be one of the best-established courses in the region but it is well worth a visit over many of the newer courses in the area and it stands the test of time extremely well. Has a reputation for being in very good condition with fast and true greens and if you haven’t played there before don’t miss it next time you are in the area.
